<p> 故事发生在19世纪的某一时期，社会处在快速发展且无秩序的阶段：没有法治只有人治，所谓的正义往往都靠子弹说话。传奇警长Templeton Howl在与小圣徒帮老大Coyote Saint的决斗中牺牲了，但也成功将这个恶棍击伤并送进了难以逃脱的沙漠监狱：恶魔枷锁。黑帮被解散，得来不易的和平开始了。</p>
<p> 10年之后，玩家扮演的是Howl唯一的儿子Kid。那个时候Kid仍然是个孩子，在农场中过着平凡无奇的生活。但是随着家里的生活越来越拮据，Kid的母亲被迫将他送到大城市Swellsville，以便让他能找到一份养家糊口的工作。虽然最初的目的只是帮家里解决经济上的困难，但Kid在这个陌生城市的旅程却很快卷入了一个更大的冒险之中：诈骗、马戏团里的谋害事件、战争爆发以及与小圣徒帮喽罗之间的冲突。</p>
<p> 《靴山英雄》采用回合制战斗以及探索世界的模式。战斗系统则用能量槽取代计时器，所有的进攻和防守招式都需要特定数量的能量值，所以只要能量够用，玩家可以在任何时候瞬时使用招式，并且允许玩家取消已经选择的招式，且不会损耗任何能量值，这些能量值又可以重新用在新选择的招式上。</p>
